Based on the financial and emotional triumphs that this family has faced, Lena seems to be the foundation that holds them in place. With this, how might the plant she holds close to her represent Lena's relationship with her family?

Lena takes care of a plant throughout the course of the play. She admits that it never seems to have quite enough sunlight, or enough nourishment yet despite the unfavorable conditions, the plant flourishes and grows. Lena cares for the plant, much how she unconditionally cares for and supports her family throughout the financial and emotional struggles they face. For instance, she supports Ruth through her pregnancy, and although Ruth is worried and the family's situation is difficult, Lena expresses joy and her hope that it will be a girl. Lena also encourages her son to be faithful to himself and to his family and to keep good morals, like his own father had. Lena is like the roots, the one to provide stability for all during the difficult times.
Very interesting question. Lena cares for the plant throughout the entire play. Lena became so hostal when someone bothered the plant. No matter how bad or weak it looked, she still took good care for the plant as if it were her child. Lena supports the family through what ever struggles or hardships that they had been in. Lena is like the latch on a parachute, if she is broken the whole family falls. On the other hand if the hatch is working and running the family would still float high.(CP3)
Lena and her family went through all the hardships and survived. The plant that Lena has gets little sunlight making it harder to survive. The plant is also in a pot and that doesnt allow the plant to grow freely, keeping it contained to one little area. All these things are working against the plant just like everyhting was working againt Lena and her family. This made things harded with her family because of all the struggles in the house. KET
As Lena takes care of her family, she takes care of the plant. The plant somewhat resembles the family in ways because of the struggle they are enduring. Even though there isn't enough sunlight for the plant, it's still growing. Even though the Younger family is enduring struggles, they are still surviving. This is what the plant resembles.

I think it shows that she might be worn down and tired, like the plant, but she is still holding on. The check starts to bring the family some hope, but after Walter loses it all hope seems to prevail. Lena holds the family close to her and they survive and come out even stronger. ANZ
Lorraine Hansbury: Author of 1961 screenplay "A Raisin in the Sun". Became the youngest American playwright and the only African American to win an award for Best Play of the Year by the NY Drama Critics Circle. When talking about her screenplay, Hansberry told her husband she wanted, "to write a social drama about blacks that was good art. Instead of stereotyped characters that would bear no resemblance to actual people, she invented a situation that was sometimes painfully realistic. The plot revolves around what her characters do given the opportunity to escape their cramped surroundings."
